Home The Wedding Unity Sand Ceremony

Wedding Sand Ceremony

A Unity Sand Ceremony is a unique alternative to a unity candle for a wedding.  The symbolism can be personalized to suite your wedding ceremony by incorporating your family, children or other people who are important to the bride and groom.  Assigning a different color sand to each member of the sand ceremony is a great way to coordinate the sand ceremony with your wedding  theme.

  How the Sand Ceremony works
Step 1

In preparation for the wedding sand ceremony have individual cylinders pre-filled with sand (color of your choice) for each person who will be participating in the wedding sand ceremony. The heart vase shown in this example is an example of one of the many sand ceremony sets available

Helpful Hint -Keep in mind the size of your center vase and the amount of sand it will hold when preparing the sand cylinders for the individuals involved in the ceremony so that you won't end up over filling it or not having enough sand to fill it up.
Step 2

The sand ceremony is typically started by the groom pouring a portion of his sand (color of your choice) into the center glass vase.

Helpful Hint - You may also want to consider using funnel or other item if the opening to the center vase you select is narrow and could make it difficult to get the sand in the vase.
Step 3

The bride will follow by adding a portion of her sand into the center vase.  If additional family members are involved they will then add their sand after the bride.

Step 4

After each person has poured a portion of their sand in the center vase the ceremony will be completed by the bride and groom simultaneously pouring the balance of their sand into the center vase at the same time.

The combining of the colored sand represents the union of the bride and groom and their families.

Helpful Hint - If you plan to keep your sand ceremony vase as a momento we recommend using a vase  that has a top or center cork to hold the sand in place.
